Amtrak's F59PHI, which is the designation given to a F59PH with the streamlined fiberglass nose, roof panels, and fuel tank skirting added, presents a startling contrast, stylistically and mechanically, to the twenty-year-old F40PH it replaced. Similar in styling to Amtrak's bold Genesis series of diesels, the F59PH boasts 3,000 hp and vastly improved efficiency. With its low emissions output, economical dynamic braking, aerodynamic cab, and low maintenance requirements, the F59PHI, which first appeared in 1998, was built to transport Amtrak into the new millennium.
