With the foundation of the German Reichsbahn in 1920, Prussian freight car types were predominant as private owner cars. Prior to that, breweries in the south German Duchy of Baden had the free choice to buy alternate designs like the sturdy and affordable Swiss beer cars. A number of them was imported from the neighboring country or built in license and they proved in practice for years.

In 1865, Mr. Louis Ganter bought a small brewery pub in the town of Freiburg west of the Black Forest. He made his beer a success and acquired an area to build a large new brewery in 1877. The “Ganter” brewery had no siding track on its plant, but some privately-owned beer cars which were operated from the nearest railway station. “Ganter Bier” is family-owned to the present.
