With the foundation of the German Reichsbahn in 1920, Prussian freight car types were predominant as private owner cars. Prior to that, breweries in the south German Duchy of Baden had the free choice to buy alternate designs like the sturdy and affordable Swiss beer cars. A number of them was imported from the neighboring country or built in license and they proved in practice for years.

The brewery named “Zur Sonne” (“The Sun”) was founded in Gottmadingen near the Swiss border in 1821. Master brewer Bilger’s beer got well-liked in Southern Germany and Switzerland. The brewery shipped the beer by railroad already in 1880 and soon after bought some Swiss SIG beer cars. “Bilger” was one of the great German beer brands for many decades, but it finally was taken over by a competitor and closed in 1976.
