With a wave of industry consolidation behind it, North American railroading has entered a modern era of heavy hauling. Freight traffic is booming, and locomotive orders from the continent's dominant Class I roads—Union Pacific, BNSF, CSX, Norfolk Southern, Canadian National, and Canadian Pacific—are moving at a record pace. The battle to supply this 21st-century fleet is fiercely contested by the two remaining diesel titans: Caterpillar®-owned EMD with its SD70ACe, and General Electric with its standard-bearing Evolution Series, the ES44AC and ES44DC.
At the heart of the Evolution Series is a revolutionary prime mover: the four-cycle, 12-cylinder GEVO-12. Delivering the same massive 4,400 horsepower as its 16-cylinder FDL predecessor, the GEVO-12 consumes less fuel and reduces emissions by a staggering 40%. GE has boldly proclaimed the EVOs to be “the most fuel-efficient, most environmentally friendly diesel locomotives in history.” Re-thought from the ground up and backed by 25 new U.S. patents, every major Class I railroad has eagerly adopted them, with BNSF currently rostering the largest fleet.
Like all MTH Premier locomotives, the all-new ES44AC delivers O Scale’s finest combination of detail, realism, and performance. Our newly tooled body features sophisticated slide modifications, allowing us to accurately recreate the unique, road-specific body configurations seen across today’s rail networks. On the track, you’ll hear the authentic, throaty chant of a real GEVO-12 motor. Throttle down to a buttery-smooth three scale miles per hour to admire the Evolution Series as it glides by, showcasing see-through fans and grilles, safety tread walkways, and a host of separately applied metal details.
