Overview
In the mid-1940s, General Motors's Electro-Motive Division had the difficult task of following their own wildly successful FT diesel locomotive, which had proved diesels could haul freight more profitably than steamers, changing U.S. railroad history. After the F-2 (produced for only five months), which helped EMD make the transition from war-time to peace-time production, EMD proved they had readjusted to a civilian economy by producing the F-3. They announced the 1,500 horsepower F-3 in the fall of 1946, after more than one year and 110,000 miles of testing on 21 roads. They billed it as "the widest range locomotive in history." This versatility was important in an environment where passenger traffic was falling and sometimes unpredictable. Although "F" had originally designated freight service, many of the F-3s (and other EMD F-series cabs) were equipped with steam generators that made them suitable for passenger service as well. EMD marketing emphasized this flexibility and the ease of maintenance of the standardized, mass-produced F-units. Like EMD, M.T.H. follows up the success of the FTs in our last catalog with beautiful F-3 ABA sets. Available in the markings of the Burlington and Southern Pacific railroads, these engines will pull your freight consists with style. Pull-out fact: EMD's F-3 was a single-engine 1,500 horsepower diesel with a 16-cylinder 567B GM two-cycle prime mover.
