In its heyday, the Pennsylvania Railroad was one of the largest transportation systems the world had ever seen. Over its 30,000 miles of track roamed thousands of locomotives and tens of thousands of cars, most of them designed by the railroad itself and many of them built in the road’s own shops in Altoona, PA. The Pennsy’s conquest of the Appalachian Mountains at Horseshoe Curve, just west of Altoona, was and still is a landmark of railroad engineering, carrying freight and passengers between the East and the Midwest.
