Sporting a rugged and dependable look, Baldwin's AS-616 diesel locomotive became the perfect choice for roads looking for a reliable beast of burden. In fact the 616 eventually proved to be Baldwin's most popular road switcher thanks to its remarkable ability to adapt to almost any type of service. Although not glamorous, the AS-616, as much as any diesel, epitomized the term workhorse. From mainline drags to locals, to transfer jobs and coal service, the 616 was up to the task. Beginning in 1950, Baldwin's Eddystone plant was busy producing the rugged 1600 horsepower six axle switcher with production finally ceasing in 1955. A total of 168 units were produced.
