Overview
The U50 and U50C were General Electric's atypically flat-faced solution to Union Pacific's longing for extremely high horsepower single locomotives. These twin-engined monsters produced 5000 hp using GE's FDL-series engines. The U50C differed significantly from the earlier U50 in several ways: the radiators and generators changed places, with the U50C's radiators at the center and generators at the ends, it measured 79 feet long (to the U50's incredible 83 feet 6 1/2 inches), and the U50C had two three-axle, three motor trucks, as opposed to the earlier model's four four-axle trucks. UP bought 40 U50Cs between 1969 and 1971. Add a non-powered version of this incredible locomotive to your powered Proto-Sound 2.0 equipped U50C for a fun-filled multi-unit lashup. Equipped with operating metal couplers and all the details found on the powered version but at half the cost make this unit an inexpensive addition to your roster.
