Since 1940, the Ski Train has been a Denver tradition. Travelling the 57-mile route from Denver Union Station to Winter Park in just over two hours, the famous train travels through mountainous terrain and shows dramatic vistas not seen anywhere but from the ski train. Railfans will also see several famous DRG sites, including the Denver North Yards, with the metal water tower from the original Moffat Shops; the horseshoe curve at Rocky; Tolland, a major division point in the DRG's early history; and the highest density of railroad tunnels in the western hemisphere: 27 tunnels in 25 miles. Passengers travel through the famed Moffat Tunnel under the Continental Divide. The 6.2-mile-long tunnel took 48 months to bore. Once at their destination, Ski Train passengers have their choice of activities: skiing, snowboarding, dog sled rides, and snowmobiling in winter and mountain biking, hiking, alpine sliding, and music festivals in summer. The train's regular consist is 14 cars long with a capacity of 750 passengers, the largest of any scheduled passenger train in the U.S., plus it carries two or three private cars on most runs.
