Gauge 3-Rail track systems including those systems offered by Gargraves and Lionel OverviewEven model train manufacturers recognized that not all travelers exclusively relied on the railroad to get them to their destination. Consequently, several "transportation toys" debuted early in the history of model railroading and were marketed to tinplate model railroaders as accessories for their layouts. Two of these are featured in our 2003 Tinplate Traditions lineup, the No. 85 Race Car Set and the No. 50 Airplane and Airport set. The 1912 No. 85 Race Car Set was the forerunner of the slot car era of the 1960s. Two tinplate constructed cars, featuring rubber tires and cast driver and passenger rode atop a tinplate track section in the shape of a two lane oval. Powered by a standard AC transformer, the cars would zip around the track with pickups sparking the motors whining. The No. 85 returns to life again in 2003 and can be expanded with additional straight and curve sections of track. This very limited production run is a must for any tinplate enthusiast looking to recreate the full range of tinplate products offered for the early model train enthusiast.
