In 1936 Lionel first cataloged the O Gauge No. 1071E Lionel Junior Distant Control Streamliner set - a stamp metal painted streamlined set "modeled after a famous Diesel-type design" and finished in chrome and painted livery. Originally configured with a No. 1700E powered car, two No. 1701 coaches and a trailing No. 1702 observation car the Lionel Junior 1700 passenger sets were offered in a number of different liveries through 1937.
Originally offered at the incredible price of just $8.75 for the set (which also contained track and transformer), buyers could opt for the more expensive No. 1066E Distant Control Railroad which added a sceniced platform with mountain backgrounds to the set's train, track and transformer for just $15.95.
Returning to the rails in 2012, these all-new Lionel Corporation Tinplate offerings are configured with one No. 1700E powered car, one No. 1701 coach and one No. 1702 observation. A separately sold No. 1701 coach can be added to complete the set's original four-unit consist.
Available in both Contemporary, sound-equipped trim or with a traditional AC motor and e-unit, the 1700 Lionel Junior Passenger Sets are sure to amaze all who see them run. Unlike the original 1936 set, only these Lionel Corporation Tinplate Contemporary sets sport modern features including a vibrant whistle and clanging bell and a smooth drive train that can pull the consist's cars and several add-on coaches.
